Market development
In terms of volume, wood flooring accounts for only a limited share of the total flooring market. However, its relatively high price gives it a higher market share in terms of value. Other types of flooring include textile, vinyl, ceramics, laminates, and rubber.

Historically (1980-2000), the volume of wood flooring sales in Western Europe has grown at an annual rate of more than 6%. The general economic turmoil since 2008 has caused a severe contraction of the wood flooring market in all advanced economies. The market is not expected to pick up before summer 2010.

Different factors are driving market growth in different regions, e.g. natural product, design features, environmental friendliness, exclusivity, hygienic aspects and ease of cleaning. Underlying construction growth and the substitution rate (switch from other floor types to wood flooring) also vary by region.

There are also differences in terms of wood flooring types: veneer, mosaic, two-layer, multilayer, thin solid and thick solid. Multilayer has the largest market share of the wood flooring types and has historically grown the fastest in Western Europe. Thin solid floors and mosaic are losing ground. The thinner and cheaper veneer floor is successfully challenging laminate. This trend, which is expected to continue, is favourable to NFI since our main products are multilayer, two-layer and veneer.
